Program Curriculum

The Dual-Level Organizational Development – Business Administration (BS in Business Administration/MS in Organizational Development) program has been designed with input from our expert faculty in the School of Business, ensuring you graduate with the in-demand skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. The program requires 63 credits from the core curriculum courses, 54 credits from program requirements, 3 credits from electives, 6 credits from elective courses, and 30 credits from the graduate level.  View a sample curriculum sheet for a snapshot of the courses you will take.

The core curriculum is a collection of courses common to all majors that sharpen students’ intellectual skills, help them critically engage with new ideas, guide them to articulate biblical perspectives on cultural forces, events, and ideas, and compel them to display virtues that are consistent with biblical teaching. ACC 221 – Financial Accounting
An introduction to financial accounting and how it is applied to financial statement preparation and analysis. The course explores basic financial accounting processes and systems from analysis of business transactions to the preparation of financial statements under US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) rules. The course moves through the accounting cycle of a merchandising business model, focusing on more advanced accounting practices, together with impacts on assets, liabilities, and the equity areas of the business.

ACC 222 – Managerial Accounting
A course that introduces students to the concepts and applications of managerial accounting. Students focus on analysis and recording of various manufacturing costs, cost-volume-profit analysis, preparation of financial statements for a manufacturer, product pricing and incremental revenue, creation of static and flexible budgets/reports, balanced scorecard and managerial decision making, standard costing systems, and evaluation of capital investments.

ACC 303 – Business Law
A study of the principles and applications of the law pertaining to business situations, including the legal system and the legal environment of business, contracts, personal property, sales, negotiable instruments, agency and employment, business organization, risk-bearing devices, and real property.

ACC 312 – Organizational Finance
An introduction to theories of finance and their application to decision-making, along with an analytical approach to the study of financial problems in both profit and non-profit organizations. Emphasis is placed on asset management, return analysis, planning and forecasting, and budgeting.

BUS 101 – Foundations of Business
A course designed to introduce the student to the political, cultural, historical, and philosophical issues that have influenced the way business is conducted. A historical study of the major events that have shaped business lays the groundwork for the remainder of the course, which includes a biblical study of the conduct of business.

BUS 201 – Introduction to Marketing
An introduction to the field of marketing and the role of marketing in business. The components of the marketing mix and marketing environment are examined. Emphasis is placed on marketing strategies, market segmentation, packaging and labeling, promotion, and regulatory and competitive forces. Students develop a marketing plan for an organization.

BUS 202 – Business Communications
A course designed to emphasize the concepts of effective oral and written communication in the business setting. Basic skills developing proposals, technical reports, and making presentations are included.

BUS 221 – Data Analysis
A course in which students learn how to use advanced features of Microsoft Excel to clean, analyze, and report spreadsheet data from business and government sources. Students create unbiased charts, dashboards, and pivot tables to drive convincing presentations and meaningful business decisions. Students also learn to add interactivity with macros.

BUS 301 – Principles of Management and Leadership
A course designed to survey current theories, principles, and practical applications of management (planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling). The course also focuses on principles of leadership, team building, and organizational design in a multicultural society.

BUS 311 – International Business
A presentation of the global perspective of the business environment with international business terms defined and the interaction of various components discussed. The subject of globalization and the role of culture and government activities are examined. This course includes studies on the international business environment, cross-border trade and investment, the global money system, international market entry, and international business strategy and operations.

BUS 313 – Operations Management
A study of management related to the production and distribution of goods and services. Topics include product design, capital investment, environmental issues, facilities and equipment, maintenance, work methods, safety and health, production planning and control, materials management project management, and quality assurance.

BUS 362 – Project Management OR BUS 364
An overview of the concepts of project management. The course introduces students to the concepts, practices, and body of knowledge of project management. Students also learn about the various tools available to support analysis for each function in the project management process.

BUS 364 – Agile Project Management OR BUS 362
A course on the agile project management framework with emphasis on the product owner’s role. Students learn how to develop project vision and the product roadmap, identify user roles, and write user stories. Additional topics include stakeholder identification, chartering, team development, release planning, value assignment, communication, quality, risk, and change management.

BUS 491 – Business Policy and Strategy
This academic capstone course is a comprehensive and integrated study of current business topics. The case study method is used to discuss policy formulation and strategic planning. Included is a study of the application of biblical ethics to the field of business. Issues of current relevance, including resource-based theory, stakeholder management, enterprise strategy, transactions cost theory, agency theory, restructuring, strategic alliances, and global competitiveness, are covered. This course is designed to utilize the student’s knowledge of business and apply this knowledge to analyzing actual business situations and developing business strategies.

BUS 499 – Internship
A work experience in secular business, nonprofit agency, church, or missions management, designed to use the skills and abilities developed in the classroom and apply them to the workplace. The internship is supervised by both the cooperating organization and a University faculty member in the School of Business.

SOC 332 – Economics
A study of economic systems. Emphasis is placed on historical and contemporary relationships between consumers and producers, price determination and market interaction, and income and employment determination.

While the tuition costs vary by program level, the rate is typically $425 per credit or 12K per year for A.A. and B.S. programs and $300-$725 per credit for graduate programs.

Cairn Online courses based on Cairn’s 100+ years tradition of excellence in biblical education. Our on faculty has carefully designed them taking into consideration what works best for the online learner. The modular design and asynchronous delivery enable you to complete your studies while you pursue your career, ministry and spend time with your family.

Courses typically contain seven units and are delivered in 7-week terms*. Each unit contains 5-7 modular activities. Each learning activity includes instructional videos accompanied by reflections, quizzes, discussion forums and other assessments. Courses also utilize adaptive learning technologies such as Cerego for long-term retention of concepts and VoiceThread for enhanced collaboration.

The asynchronous delivery provides flexibility around your daily busy schedule. In most courses, interactive activities are typically due by Wednesday while the rest of the unit’s work is due by Sunday night. The MBA, M.A. in Music and Criminal Justice programs use the 7RD2 process and require the completion of certain activities daily to optimize learning.

Our own Cairn faculty intentionally participate in the course throughout the week to provide you with an incarnational experience.

*Few capstone courses are intentionally offered in 14 weeks to optimize student learning.

A.A. programs usually take 2 years and B.S. and B.A. programs typically take 3-4 years to complete.

Graduate programs vary in length by program. As an example, Cairn’s traditional MBA typically takes 20 months to complete but then there is also the accelerated One-Year MBA that you can complete in 12 months.

If you are looking to complete your program sooner, you can consider taking more 7-week courses at a time. 

All courses are developed by one or more course developers and taught by our own faculty. The instructors are also intentionally involved in the course throughout the week by providing direction in the course activities, participating in the forum discussions, grading the student work and providing substantive feedback. Most courses also offer optional office hours weekly via Zoom or similar video conferencing tools.

Our instructional design team works very closely with the course developers and carefully plans the courses to balance the technology requirements. Most courses use the eLearning platform for hosting the course materials, Panopto for video capture and storage, VoiceThread for enhanced discussion forums, and Cerego for adaptive learning. Zoom is used at times for virtual office hours. These sessions are optional.

Except for the Hebrew and Greek language courses for the B.S. in Biblical Studies program, typically there are no required meeting times for the completing the course activities.  

The course transfer depends on where you are transferring from, and what program you are transferring to. If you are coming to Cairn Online from another institution, it is very likely you will have some credits that will transfer. Because there are so many options, we encourage you to talk to an enrollment counselor. If you are transferring out, Cairn is a regionally accredited school and some credits should transfer with relative ease. Each college sets their own transfer criteria, so be sure to check their policies for specifics.

Cairn Online offers a variety of options for prior learning and experience. You can receive up to 6 credits for prior learning for graduate programs. At the discretion of the program advisor, three to six credits for prior learning (CPL) can be awarded for students with extensive background in areas addressed by specific courses. Additionally, advance standing may be granted for Bible or theology credits earned at an accredited Bible college, Christian liberal arts college or university, or seminary. Credits will be granted on a course by course basis.

Cairn is approved to offer financial aid because of its regional accreditation. There are many options available and typically students qualify for at least one type of federal aid. Many students receive scholarships and grants that make earning their degree even more affordable. Cairn offers a variety of scholarships and discounts in addition to options for loans and grants.
