Choosing a Special Education or ABA Graduate Program

Cairn University’s Department of Special Education offers four graduate programs for professionals seeking to skillfully serve individuals with special needs and their families. With online programs ranging from 24 to 40 credits, Cairn is committed to helping you reach your goals on your schedule, whether using CEUs to gain fresh ideas for teaching diverse learners or pursuing a high-demand credential in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or Special Education.

Special Education

With growing student enrollment and 46 states reporting a shortage of special education teachers in 2017–18, Cairn’s special education programs prepare you to meet one of the greatest needs in today’s schools, better serving students with special needs in both inclusive classrooms and more restricted settings. With program offerings for individuals with or without teaching certification, Cairn’s special education programs integrate a biblical worldview with the expertise and best practices needed to work with  a wide range of students skillfully and well.

MS in Special Education

40 credits (7 semesters, including 2 summers)

  • This program may be a good fit for you if you are a Christian educator already holding a teaching certification and seeking to maximize your capacity to work with students with special needs
Special Education Certification

31 credits (6 semesters, including 2 summers)

  • This program may be a good fit for you if you are a Christian educator already holding a teaching certification and seeking to maximize your capacity to work with students with special needs

Applied Behavior Analysis

For those seeking to support individuals and families with ASD and other behavioral disorders, no more research-proven technique exists than applied behavior analysis (ABA). Cairn’s program is the first biblically-based program that integrates extensive autism training with coursework that meets the requirements for the well-recognized Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential.

Master of Arts (ABA)

30 credits (20 months)

  • This program may be a good fit for you if you are a Christian holding an undergraduate degree in any field and interested in
    • earning the highly-demanded Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential* and
    • working as a behavior analyst in schools, residential and home programs, clinics, hospitals, or other settings and/or
    • developing Christian services or ministries for individuals with autism and their families

* The BCBA credential requires 1500 or 2000 hours of supervised fieldwork.

Grad Cert in Applied Behavior Analysis

24 credits (4 semesters, including 1 summer)

  • This program may be a good fit for you if you are a Christian professional holding a master’s degree in education, psychology, or ABA and interested in
    • earning the highly-demanded Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential* and
    • working as a behavior analyst in schools, residential and home programs, clinics, hospitals, or other settings and/or
    • developing Christian services or ministries for individuals with autism and their families.

* The BCBA credential requires 1500 or 2000 hours of supervised fieldwork.
