Why Secondary Math Education?

A Secondary Math program is designed to develop reflective educators who engage students actively in their own learning and foster critical thinking skills. The curriculum includes three integrated components: a body of general studies to develop a depth in math content knowledge; education courses to align learning theory, curricular design and subject-specific methodology practices in math; and performance-based school placements for applied, contextual practice in a secondary math classroom.  Certification includes PA State Secondary Math Instructional I (Grades 7-12) as well as Association of Christian Schools International Secondary Math (Grades 7-12); certification in Special Education 7-12 and/or TESOL PK-12 may be added on to the secondary math education program.

Kate Mehmel

Kate Mehmel

Assistant Professor, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Kate Mehmel is a Cairn graduate who returned to the University after teaching high school math for 13 years. She (slowly) worked on a MA in Mathematics from Villanova while teaching, coaching, running youth group, and counseling at summer camp. She loves teenagers. She also loves to camp, hike, and generally to be outside, though inside with a book and a cup of coffee is also lovely. She spends most of her time with her toddler Eliana, who is (usually) a delight and in whom she is trying to instill a love of both the outdoors and books.
