What is a Dual Degree? (FAQs)

what is a dual degree?

What is a dual degree? Is it right for you? Does it really save you time and money? These and probably a few other questions are bouncing around your head if you are in the college decision journey. So let’s tackle those questions and concerns.

So really, what is a dual degree?

A dual degree (also known as a dual-level degree at Cairn University) is a special program that allows students to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degree at the same time. This is different from a double major. Your workload is increased—though not as much as it would be with a double major—to accommodate the dual degree requirements. That way, you complete both degree requirements in a shortened amount of time.

Is a dual degree right for me?

Sometimes, students who aren’t sure about their finances or futures will earn their bachelor’s degree first and then come back after a few years and earn a master’s. This plan works well for students who don’t mind flexibility or a less straightforward path for their career. If you are more certain about your career and the type of credentials you want, a dual-level degree allows you to optimize your time and your protect your wallet with the streamlined track.

In other words, it might be right for you if…

  • You are confident in the areas of study you want to pursue
  • The career you are looking to go into favors those with master’s degrees
  • You are willing to spend extra time now instead of even more time later
  • If the college(s) have the programs you want as a dual degree option

Can I pick any two programs?

99% of the time, colleges have pre-determined dual-level programs to choose from. They are usually for programs that naturally go together, like a psychology bachelor’s and a counseling master’s or a business administration bachelors and an MBA. If you want a more customizable option, it may be in your interest to pursue the double major option instead.

How much will a dual degree save me?

Dual degrees can save you years (yes, years!) of time and thousands (even better!) of dollars. The amount you save won’t be a universal amount across colleges or even programs, but you can rest assured that no matter where or what you choose, you WILL save!

(If you were curious and looking for some more numbers, Cairn students may save on average between 1–1.5 years and over $10,000!)

Does traditional college financial aid apply to this?

Yes (at least, at Cairn it does)! You can apply for FAFSA and scholarships just like you would for a traditional undergraduate degree.

If they’re as great as you make it sound, why doesn’t everyone do a dual degree?

Well, to be fair, not every college has every possible dual-level degree option available. Popular programs and degree “pairs” will take precedence over others. Additionally, not all careers require a master’s either, so it’s entirely up to you if you expect to want or need it in the coming years.

Think this is right for you?

We think it could be too! Cairn has many options to offer. If you’d like to learn more about any of them, feel free to fill out a request for more information.
