Dr. Allen Guelzo ’75 Invited to Heritage Foundation as Visiting Scholar

Dr. Allen GuelzoOn January 15, 2020, Cairn alum Dr. Allen Guelzo ’75 was recognized as a visiting fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank headquartered in Washington D.C.  Among three other American academic leaders, Dr. Guelzo received an invitation due in part to his acclaimed work covering Abraham Lincoln and Civil War history.
Dr. Guelzo received his BS in Bible from Cairn University and went on to earn his MDiv from Reformed Episcopal Seminary. After earning an MA and PhD in history from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Guelzo entered a career in academia, joining the history department at Eastern University in 1991 and then the same department at Gettysburg College in 2004. Currently, he holds the position of director of initiative on politics and statesmanship at Princeton University’s James Madison Program. 
The visiting fellows at the Heritage Foundation work in conjunction with the Simon Center for American Studies at the Edwin J. Feulner Institute. The Institute, in alignment with the Heritage Foundation mission, produces scholarship and communication to “formulate and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense.”
In addition to this invitation, Dr. Guelzo’s 2019 book Reconstruction: A Concise History was included in Foreign Affairs website’s “Best Books of 2019.” Dr. Guelzo’s book covers the long-lasting effects of the many complicated elements that were at work during the Reconstruction era. This most-recent honor joins a long list of literary achievements, including his Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History in 2013 and the Bradley Prize in 2018.
