Flourishing Classrooms in a Broken World
If you’re an educator, you keep hearing our system is broken—something is not working. It’s a grab bag of complaints: culture wars, falling test scores, technology addictions, and behavior problems. As Christian educators, we understand the reality of living in a fallen world—brokenness doesn’t surprise us. We’re still called to steward our time with the students in our care; oftentimes, we’re asked to do so with few resources. How, then, can we focus on “redeeming the time” (Eph. 5:16, KJV) in our classrooms, offering our students the head and heart skills they’ll need to flourish in this digital age? For this year’s Empowering Educators conference at Cairn University, we’d like to spend more time doing instead of theorizing. We’ll have the opportunity to try the methods practicing educators are using to mitigate some of the problems we’re facing. Our focus will be on active learning strategies we can use across the curriculum.
