Dr. Steven McCollum has been active as a music educator for the past 25 years, teaching students of all ages. During that time, his choirs have won awards for their artistic excellence, performed at music educators conferences, traveled internationally, and created notable recordings.
Before coming to Cairn, Dr. McCollum was the director of music at Patrick Henry College, where he oversaw the curriculum development of the college’s growing music program; directed the PHC Chorale; and taught music history, conducting, and music pedagogy. He also was the creator and administrator of the Patrick Henry College Youth Music Academy, a consortium of high school music ensembles that serve as teaching labs for the college’s music students. In addition to his leadership at Patrick Henry College, Dr. McCollum served as the director of choral/vocal activities at Simpson University and as the chair of the music department at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
Several of Dr. McCollum’s historical choral editions have been published by Sunhawk Music Publishers and National Music Publishers. He has been a conducting fellow at the Oregon Bach Festival and with Chorus America, where he was privileged to study with Helmuth Rilling, Anton Armstrong, Ronald Staheli, and Duain Wolf. He often serves as an adjudicator of music festivals and as a curriculum consultant for private schools in the mid-Atlantic.
