Global Mission Week 2017

Christianity and Islam: An Examination

JANUARY 23-27, 2017

For over a thousand years, Christianity and Islam have coexisted, sometimes peacefully and sometimes in war. In today’s world, it is more important than ever for Christians to have an understanding of Islam and its history, traditions, and scriptures. This year’s Global Mission Week will focus on Islam and the good news of Jesus Christ for all. Our speakers, Ralph Sauers and Kate McCord, bring a lifetime of experience ministering among Muslims to help our students….

  • Learn about the differences between Islamic and evangelical Christian worldviews.
  • Understand Islamic culture and theology compared to evangelical Christianity.
  • Engage with practical missiological issues that arise when ministering to and sharing the gospel with Muslims.
  • Interact with Muslims in the US and abroad with grace and truth.

Featured Speakers

Kate McCord

Kate McCord is a writer, speaker, and spiritual director. She is the author of “In the Land of Blue Burqas”, “Why God Calls us to Dangerous Places” and “Farewell Four Waters” (Moody Publishers). Kate worked in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2013. During her years in country, she served as a humanitarian aid worker, delivering projects to benefit the people of Afghanistan. She also learned the local language and developed deep and lasting friendships with local Afghans. Her experiences in Afghanistan profoundly affected both her personal relationship with God and her view of life as ministry and ministry as life. After returning to the United States, Kate followed Christ into a role with Santé Ministries. As part of Santé, Kate provides services and resources to help Christ-followers deepen their intimacy with Christ and a personal ministry that flows from that experience of intimacy.

Ralph Sauers

Ralph and Maridee met in Nigeria in 1977 where they served as single missionaries. Ralph taught in a Nigerian Bible college for 3 years, and Maridee served as a missionary among the deaf. They married in 1979 and joined SIM in 1983. During the 1980’s, Ralph and Maridee served the Lord in pioneer evangelism and church planting among a nomadic Muslim people in West Africa. Illness brought them back to the States in 1991.

Through the 90’s, the Sauers worked at SIM USA’s headquarters, coordinating the screening, placement, and orientation of long-term missionary candidates. They served as Southeast Regional Directors for SIM from 2000-2006. In 2006, they returned to West Africa to disciple leaders in the young church emerging among the nomadic people they served among previously. Maridee also taught in the local missionary kid school.

They have since returned to the US to care for Ralph’s aging parents. The Sauers continue to support the West Africa ministry as non-residential missionaries, and serve with SIM in mobilizing new missionaries among the unreached with a focus on Muslims and nomadic peoples.
