Cairn University Chorale Tours PA, NJ, and Washington DC

Chorale singing at CommencementThe annual Cairn University Chorale tour began with a performance at the Golden Graduate Hymn Sing on May 4, 2018. After singing at the University’s commencement ceremony the following morning, the University Chorale embarked on an 11-day tour that included concerts and school visits in the Washington DC, central Pennsylvania, and central New Jersey regions. Dr. Steven McCollum, director of choral activities, led the group in each performance.
One of the most special parts of the Chorale tour is its ability to connect with Cairn alumni and previous members of the Chorale. While visiting Shalom Christian Academy in Chambersburg, PA, the Chorale connected with Sharayah (Carbaugh) Smiley ’15. The last time the Chorale visited Shalom, Sharayah was a member of the Chorale and studying in the music education program. Now, she is the instrumental teacher at the school and continues a strong relationship with the University through events such as the Chorale tour visit.
The Chorale also traveled to Trinity Christian School in Fairfax, VA, where Dr. Laura McCollum, wife of Director Steven McCollum, serves as the director of institutional effectiveness. Dr. Todd Williams served as the headmaster of Trinity before becoming president of Cairn in 2008. The Chorale collaborated with the Trinity choirs and Mrs. Debbie Koth in reciprocal presentations and on shared repertoire.
In addition to performances and on-the-road travel, the Chorale members had the opportunity to bond with one another on day of sightseeing in Washington DC. The students particularly enjoyed visiting the National Art Gallery, the Smithsonian Museums, and the Museum of the Bible. The day concluded with a poignant moment of the Chorale singing Peter Lutkin’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
The tour concluded with two marvelous concerts at The Trust Performing Arts Center in Lancaster, PA, and Stone Hill Church in Princeton, NJ. Alumni spanning four decades were in attendance to enjoy this final concert.
The Chorale exists as a place for auditioned students of all Cairn University programs to grow as artists for the glory of God together. To learn more about the other School of Music ensembles, visit cairn.edu/music/ensembles.
