Cairn’s MS in Counseling Program

Cairn University’s MSC program is a 48 credit master’s program which consists of coursework that equips students to begin the process of obtaining licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey. Graduates of the MSC program have also utilized their coursework to pursue and obtain licensure in many other states*.  In many states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the educational requirement for licensure as a counselor is 60 credits. Cairn University has created the Advanced Specialization in Counseling track, also known as the “Third Year Program” for those students who wish to pursue licensure and complete the 60 required credits.

*If you are a graduate or prospective student who is interested in pursuing licensure in a state other than Pennsylvania or New Jersey, please contact the Director of Practicums and Internships to discuss program compatibility.

Advanced Specialization in Counseling (Third Year Program)

The Third Year Program is comprised of 12 credits/6 courses that are educational content areas required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the State of New Jersey in order to obtain licensure. Coursework taken during the Third Year Program may be different for those who are pursuing licensure in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Typically, the majority of coursework for the Third Year Program takes place on Tuesday evenings and is completed in one calendar year.

 Application Process

When students are in the first semester of their second year of the MSC program, a student may choose to apply to the Third Year Program to pursue licensure. Applications are due no later than February 1 as students must begin the process of securing practicum and internship sites for the upcoming summer and fall semesters.

Students who have graduated from another university with their Masters in Counseling may also apply to the Third Year Program to complete state educational requirements for licensure. However, any student from another university who wishes to apply to the Third Year Program must simultaneously apply to the general Graduate Application for Admission which includes the submission of transcripts, references, essays, and a group interview.

Licensure Requirements

State licensure requirements vary from state to state and the process of determining state requirements can be confusing. If you would like assistance in this process, please feel free to contact the Director of Practicums and Internships for Cairn’s MSC Program. Below, we also have provided a list of State websites with various links for your convenience.
